The scoreboard does not keep every receipt.

Wyoming Basketball Stats Beyond Scoring starts with the players, their work, and a clear record of the game. WyoHoops brings Wyoming hoops stories, stats, and film together.

Some players change a game before the ball ever goes through the net. Look at the work that creates the next possession.

Rebounds finish and restart possessions

A defensive rebound can complete a stop. An offensive rebound can extend a possession and create another opportunity. Read the rebound number alongside film: contact before the ball arrives, pursuit outside the player’s area, and the outlet after the catch. The total matters, but the sequence can explain the player’s habits.

Assists tell part of the passing story

An assist records a pass leading to a made basket under the scorer’s interpretation. It does not capture every useful pass. Look at timing, whether the receiver can play immediately, and how the passer responds when the first option disappears. The extra pass and the decision that beats pressure may be important even without a credited assist.

Steals need context on both ends

A steal can turn defense into an immediate scoring chance. Watch how it happens: anticipation, positioning, active hands, or help from a teammate. Also notice the possessions where a gamble fails. A highlight of a takeaway does not show the complete defensive assignment.

Blocks are one part of protecting the rim

A block is visible and easy to celebrate. Film can also show contests without contact, rotations, and possessions where a defender prevents a shot altogether. Evaluate whether the player controls space and keeps the team organized after the attempt. The box score and the possession tell different parts of that story.

Combine categories instead of chasing one label

Players contribute in different roles, and reporting can vary. Compare what is available, leave unknown categories unknown, and avoid turning one statistic into a complete defensive grade. WyoHoops’ leaders view can introduce players worth watching; the next step is to examine the decisions behind the production.

Questions from the sideline

Does a low steals total mean weak defense?

Not by itself. Defensive positioning and role can matter without producing steals.

How should I handle an unreported category?

Leave it unknown and look for the source report. Do not turn a missing value into an assumed zero.
